High roller poker players are going to Melbourne this month: the high-stakes capital of Australia. They’re making the trip for the 2014 Aussie Millions Poker Championship, which will be staged January 23rd to February 10th, 2014, at the Crown Casino. Players worldwide have been drawn to Australian poker since the sixth Aussie Millions in 2003. For the first time since the tournament’s inception, a truly international group of 122 poker players competed for their share of the AU$1.2 million prize pool. That was the beginning of the poker boom, and players made Melbourne an annual stop.

The ones with an appetite for risk find the Aussie Millions especially appealing, with its AU$100,000 buy-in event. Gus Hansen, Patrik Antonius and Antonio Esfandiari are just a few of the high-profile poker pros that regularly show up to play. In 2011, the Aussie Millions added the AU$250,000 Super High Roller event, shining the spotlight on Australian poker. Twenty high roller poker players welcomed the challenge and Erik Seidel finished first. Phil Ivey won in 2012, and last year, Sam Trickett beat the competition and walked away with AU$2 million.

High Roller Treatment

With that kind of cash, Trickett is the kind of high roller the Crown flies in and out of Australia on its private jet to gamble in its exclusive VIP gaming salons. The catch is that Trickett would have to be willing to wager a big chunk of his winnings at the gaming tables. He would place his bets in the privacy of a VIP gaming salon with a panoramic view of Port Phillip Bay and the city skyline. Trickett would have endless options when it comes to food. In the VIP gaming salons, players can order off the menu from any restaurant at the Crown 24 hours a day.

VIP Rooms

Poker players with more modest bankrolls will be invited to play high-stakes cash games in the elite Mahogany Room. The Crown is very selective about who gains entry to this exclusive VIP gaming area. The Mahogany Room is spacious with a separate dining room, bar, lounge and a terrace with a view of the Yarra River. On the other end of the spectrum, players can opt for the high-stakes cash games in the Crown Poker Room, with more than 700 poker tables. On a heater? Keep it going because the Crown Poker Room never closes.

High Roller Casino

A casino for high rollers only is in the works in Sydney. Final approval to build an invitation-only gaming resort on Sydney Harbour is expected in March. The lowest limit tables at the Crown Sydney will be $30 for baccarat, $20 for blackjack and $25 for roulette. Based on the rates of VIP gaming at the Crown Melbourne, that’s the equivalent of a minimum of $2160 an hour for baccarat, $1800 for blackjack and $1500 for roulette. The members-only casino will not offer slot machines or video poker. At this point, the Crown Sydney has made no mention of poker.

Aussie Millions

Poker is on everyone’s mind at the Crown Melbourne where one of the world’s largest poker events is starting soon. The hotel will be overflowing with high roller poker players if the turnout is anything like last year, when more than two-thousand players made the trip. The Main Event begins February 2nd with an estimated AU$1.6 million first-place prize. The High Roller Challenge begins February 9th, and offers unlimited re-buys for the first four hours of play. It’s safe to assume that a player with the bankroll to cover the buy-in could easily pay to re-buy once or twice. That gives the first-place finisher the potential to win more than AU$2,000.000. Take down the tournament, and the high roller experience at casinos around the world can be yours.
